Dual Charger Setup in Garage

Project Overview & Objectives

The homeowners acquired a second electric vehicle and required an organized, high-capacity charging solution inside their two-car garage. Running two standard 48A wallboxes on an existing 200A residential panel risked continuous electrical overloads during peak evening hours when air conditioning and kitchen appliances were active. Our engineering team was tasked with deploying a paired charging setup that avoids the massive expense of a utility main service upgrade while delivering dependable overnight charging for both cars.

Technical Engineering & Execution

To solve the electrical capacity constraints, we specified two networked Level 2 charging wallboxes configured in an active master-slave power-sharing arrangement. We ran dual 6 AWG THHN copper wire circuits in high-grade EMT conduit from the main distribution panel to the garage mounting points. A dedicated current sensor communicates live panel metrics to dynamically throttle charge currents whenever domestic energy consumption spikes.

  • Dedicated continuous duty circuit design and panel inspection
  • High-amperage industrial conduit routing with zero structural impact
  • Smart dynamic load balancing configuration to prevent grid overload
  • Complete municipal permit acquisition and final utility sign-off

Results & Performance

The finished dual-charger configuration delivers up to 11.5 kW of high-speed Level 2 charging when a single vehicle is connected, and smoothly splits the available amperage into balanced 24A streams when both vehicles charge simultaneously. The installation fully passed municipal safety inspection on the first review, giving the household a dependable, clutter-free charging station tailored for years of trouble-free daily commutes.

Dual-Station Safety Standards

Shared-circuit dual chargers operate under NEC 625.42 load management with automatic fail-safe splitting and individual GFCI protection per unit.

Yes. Paired units share a single 60-100A circuit and split current automatically, so both vehicles charge safely overnight.
Simultaneously they split the available current, and when one finishes the other instantly receives full power. Staggered schedules can also guarantee full-rate windows.
One trench, one circuit run, and one permit typically cut total cost by 30 to 40 percent versus two independent installations.
